Principal Investigator: Savu, Anna
Funder: Missouri Department of Mental Health- Division of Behavioral Health (DMH-DBH)
Official Title: School-based Prevention Intervention and Resource IniTiative (SPIRIT )

The SPIRIT program, launched in 2002, seeks to prevent the use of alcohol and other drugs and reduce incidents of violence in high-risk school districts. The project also aims to improve overall school performance as a result of these preventative efforts.
This program currently serves several school districts across the state in both urban and rural areas. Prevention specialists assist in facilitating evidence-based substance abuse and violence prevention programs, help to identify and respond to additional needs of some students for selective or indicated services, provide screening and referral services upon request, and offer resources and technical assistance.

The MIMH conducts an annual evaluation of the SPIRIT program. The evaluation includes an annual self-reported student survey, interviews with SPIRIT providers and school administrators, focus groups, a review of monthly reports submitted by provider agencies, analysis of program fidelity from forms documenting program implementation, data analysis and interpretation, and reporting.
